Lisbon Souvenirs

Portugal has an endless array of souvenirs; from collectable, to edible, to drinkable, to wearable, to displayable, and everything in between.

No matter what your preference for souvenirs, or gifts, there is something for everyone in Lisbon. Finding where to find authentic/local souvenirs can be a bit overwhelming in a city filled with souvenir shops and mass-produced trinkets (though those are fun too).

What to Buy

With so many options and varieties, it can be tempting to bring an entire suitcase just to pack full of Portuguese goodies (and many do), but if you are trying to be a bit more reserve in your purchases, here are some popular items unique o, or superior in, Portugal.

Cork Products: Portugal produces one third of the world's total cork oak which produces roughly half the world's cork so cork products are in abundance. From purses to shoes, housewares to jewelry, and even furniture… the variety of things you can find made out of cork in Portugal seems endless.

Olive Oil: Portuguese olive oil is touted as some of the best in the world

Ginja: Ginjinha or simply Ginja, is a Portuguese liqueur made by infusing ginja berries (sour cherry, Prunus cerasus austera, the Morello cherry) in alcohol (aguardente) and adding sugar together with other ingredients, with cloves and/or cinnamon sticks being the most common.

Ginja is commonly served as an after dinner drink or a sweet treat in a chocolate cup.

Sardines: Portugal is said to have the best canned sardines in the world for several reasons. Many people prefer Portuguese sardines to others, claiming they have a healthier flavor. These sardines are packed in less oil, too, ensuring that more of the natural fish flavor comes through when they are eaten.

Wine: Ranked alongside renowned wineries in France, wineries in Italy, and wineries in Spain, Portugal is an indispensable contender in the world of wine production.

Portugal may be best known for Port wines, but there are many other varieties and delicious options exclusive to the country. I personally cannot recommend Vihno Verde (green wine) enough.

Pottery: For the experts, ceramics made in Portugal are a synonym of high quality. The reason for this rely first on the clay itself and then in the process, where one may find a unique 'know-how' that results from many years of experience. With quality in one hand, there is design in the other.

Portuguese Pottery, whether intricately and ornately detailed, or a simple design in a solid color, is absolutely beautiful.

Tiles (Azulejo): Along with cork, wine, and sardines, tiles may be what Portugal is most known for. These stunning works of art are seen throughout the country and as well as most images depicting Portugal.

Roosters: In Portugal, the rooster is a symbol of faith, good luck and justice based on the legend of the "Old Rooster of Barcelos". You will see the rooster in many forms in shops throughout Lisbon, including figurines, wine stoppers, pens, artwork, and ever glassware.

Swallow: The swallow is a bird that has a special place in Portuguese culture. For centuries, it has been a symbol of love, loyalty, and hope. You will see the symbolic swallow in many souvenir and ceramic shops as well as depicted in some local jewelry and art.

Where to Buy Souvenirs in Lisbon

Now that you know what to buy, here are some of my favorite places to buy them, and why.

A Vida Portuguesa Stores

A Vida Portuguesa was born out of the will to create an inventory of the brands that survived the passage of time, to highlight the quality of Portuguese manufacture and to showcase Portugal in a surprising light.

🗺️Chiado: Rua Anchieta 11 1200-023 Chiado Lisboa

🗺️Intendente: Largo do Intendente Pina Manique 23 1100-285 Lisboa

🗺️Depozito: Rua Nova do Desterro, 21 1150-242 Lisboa

🕰️All stores open daily, hours vary. See link below for individual store details

🌐A Vida Portuguesa

A Vida Portuguesa Stores are my favorite place in Lisbon to find gifts (for others and myself). The stores are beautifully curated and have a huge variety of local and made in Portugal products.

There are three locations in Lisbon (four if you count the Time Out Market location) and they offer the a huge array of proucts are every price point. Everything from soaps and lotions, to a huge array of tinned fish, to coffee and oils, blankets, pottery and embroidery, kitchen items, and so much more, you can find something for everyone.

My favorite location, and the biggest, is the Depozito store. I suggest skipping the Time Out Market location as it is more of a kiosk and has a very limited selection. Orders can also be placed on line and picked up at the Chiado, Intendente, and Depozito locations.

The stores also offers international shipping.

Tiles and Ceramics

Cortiço & Netos

(Tile Shop)

Our collection is comprised of original items manufactured from the 1960s henceforth. Unfortunately, most of the factories that produced these tiles have been shut down. However, they are milestones in the history of the Portuguese industrial tile production. Thus, the products available at C&N are unique and an invaluable testimony of the Portuguese industrial patrimony.

🗺️R. Maria Andrade 37D, 1170-215 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Mon-Sat 11a-1p, 2p-7p, Sunday Closed

🌐Cortiço e Netos (corticoenetos.com)

Cortiço & Netos has a beautiful and huge selection of tiles with endless designs and patterns. Tiles are sold individually or by weight. My only complaint about this beautiful shop is there are too many amazing pieces to choose from.

Tiles are an often sought after souvenir in Portugal, and come in many patterns, designs, shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, due to their popularity amongst tourists, many are being stolen off of buildings and sold by street vendors and in markets. It is important to be mindful and ethical when purchasing tiles and buying through a reputable shop like Cortiço & Netos.

I wandered to Cerâmicas na Linha after a stop in to the Chiado location of A Vida Portuguesa (they are practically next door to each other) and it was the first time in a year and a half I wished I had a home, because I wanted to buy EVERYTHING.

Featuring beautiful dishes, vases, espresso sets, platters, trays, ceramics, and even some artisan tiles, this store is definitely worth a visit. As a bonus, these pieces come at very reasonable prices and are more affordable than many tourist shops.

Ceramista Maria Caetano

🗺️Calçada de Santo André 91, 1100-496 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Mon-Sat 10a-7:30p, Sunday Closed

This little shop sells typical local souvenir ceramics, but with unique designs and at fair prices. The store features numerous artisan tiles, drinkware, vases and more.

By Nunes (Azulejo)

🗺️Largo São Martinho 4, 1100-537 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Daily 10a-7p

Located at the base of the Castelo do Sao Jorge, By Nunes is a bright and vibrant shop with a wide selection of typical Portuguese ceramics. While many stores sell very similar items, By Nunes has one of the largest varieties in one place and with reasonable prices.

This is a great one-stop-shop for ceramics ranging in house numbers, serving trays, the renowned Portuguese sparrows, vases, roosters, and much more. You can also find blankets, aprons, placemats and kitchen towels here.

Cork

Like Ginja, Cork products can be found on just about every corner in Lisbon. While all of it is authentic cork and made in Portugal, there are varying degrees of quality and different styles.

These are some of my favorite cork companies/stores in Lisbon:

The Cork Store

🗺️R. do Espírito Santo 5, 1100-223 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Daily 10:30a-6:30p

🌐 The Cork Store

I would best describe The Cork Store as “elevated cork” with beautiful, modern designs and pieces. From simple to funky, change purses to overnight bags, fun jewelry and and many other artisan items, the Cork Store has something unique for everyone.

Cork & Co

🗺️R. das Salgadeiras 6, 1200-396 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Mon-Sat 11a-7p, Sun closed

🌐Cork & Co

A more “chic” cork store, Cork & Co is for a very specific shopper. I am unsure if “designer cork” is an actual thing, but if it is, it is found at Cork & Co. Featuring beautiful, unique, pieces this store offers a more luxe shopping experience in a show-room setting.

Jewelry

From stalls at artisan markets, to boutiques and small shops, Lisbon has a beautiful and large array of local and handmade jewelry.

These are some of my favorites:

Hoiko

🗺️R. Poiais de São Bento 65, 1200-346 Lisboa, Portugal, Rua Poço dos Negros, nº34 1200-339 Lisboa, Rua da Madalena nº38 1100-321 Lisboa

🕰️Daily 11a-7p

🌐Hoiko

With three locations in Lisbon, Hoiko stores are beautifully curated and offer an array of jewelry at a range of price points. The stores aslo feature beautiful ceramics and other local pieces. Great for gifts… for others, or yourself.

Claudia Chaves Atelier

‘Why do I make jewellery with cork, metal, wood, stone, etc.? They are the products of a recipe of alchemy: combining an industrial design course, a jewellery design course and a contemporary jewellery course. Add the interest in eco-design and the desire to use a typically Portuguese material such as cork. Mix well with a dash of creativity and pieces like these emerge. I like to create, experiment with new materials, shapes and textures.’

🗺️Rua da Padaria 39, 1100-388 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Sun-Mon Closed, Tues-Sat 11a-6p

🌐Claudia Chaves Atelier (sumupstore.com)

If you want a truly unique souvenir or gift that can be worn and shown off, this is the place to get it. With a large array of handmade pieces, using and showcasing local materials, Claudia Chaves Atelier creates stunning pieces at a range of affordable price points that will be sure to garner questions of “where did you get that?”.

Ginja and Wine

The A Ginjinha bar

The A Ginjinha bar originally opened in 1840, and has been run by the same family for five generations - if you want a taste of authentic Portugal then there is no better place.

🗺️Largo São Domingos 8, 1100-201 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️ Daily 9a-10p

🌐A Ginjinha Espinheira | Ginjinha Espinheira

Can you get ginja around every turn in Lisbon? Yes. Can you claim you bought said ginja at the oldest ginja bar in Portugal? No.

This tiny bar sells bottles in numerous sizes (including those that fit carry on requirements) and at varying price points, as well as glasses, T shirts, tote bags, and gift sets. Be sure to have a taste while in the bar picking out your souvenir bottles.

Napoleon- Wine & Gourmet Shops

🗺️Rua da Conceição 16, 1100-154 Lisboa, Portugal (there are numerous location, this is the largest)

🕰️Mon-Sat 10a-7p, Sun Closed

🌐Napoleon Wine & Gourmet

Napoleon has a huge selection of wine and very knowledgeable and helpful staff. If there is a Portuguese wine to be found: it is at Napoleon. Wine (and liquor) are very fairly priced.

Shipping is available, and any purchases being brought home in luggage are carefully wrapped.

Casa do Licor Pastel de Nata

🗺️Largo Calhariz 17- A, 1200-086 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Mon-Sat 9a-10p, Sun 10a-10p

🌐Casa do Licor Pastel de Nata

Is it 100% geared to tourists? Yes. Is it a bit pricy? Yes. Does it travel better than Pastel de Nata? Yes. Do people love getting it as a gift? Also yes.

My Pastel De Nata loving friends loved the little bottles of Licor pastel de nata I brought them. One highly recommends adding it to coffee.

Sardines

The canned fish industry originally began in France, in 1824 in the city of Nantes. However, the practice moved to Portugal around 30 years later since the quantity and quality of sardines were much higher and the industry was motivated by the country's long coastline and historical fishing practices.

Sardines are a Portuguese staple and make great, compact gifts to bring back as edible souvenirs. Some varieties also come in beautiful tins and packaging that can be displayed for those less inclined to eat these delicacies.

There are seemingly endless places to buy tinned sardines in Lisbon, from huge tourist-centered sardine stores like The Fantastic World of Sardines to small mom & pop stores with a select variety to grocery stores and everything in between. You will not be hard pressed to find sardines in Lisbon.

Conserveira de Lisboa

The shop maintains its original layout, where the main counter, the shelves and the office have not undergone any changes, maintaining the typical style of the commercial establishments of the 1930s.

🗺️R. dos Bacalhoeiros 34, 1100-071 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Mon-Sat 10a-7p, Sunday Closed

🌐Conserveira de Lisboa

The traditional shop of the Conserveira de Lisboa appears to be from another time and is truly an experience. With high quality products and an ode to history, this is the quintessential place in Lisbon to buy sardines (and other tinned fish).

A Mercearia do Pai Júlio

🗺️R. do Diário de Notícias nº45-47, 1200-141 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Mon-Sat 9a-8p, Sunday Closed

This little local shop in Bairro Alto has a great selection of sardines (and tinned fish), as well as great oils and other packaged bites to take home with you. Also a great spot to grab a quick bite and/or cerveja.

The Fantastic World of Sardines

Souvenir shop showcasing fancy tins of Portuguese sardines in a wacky, circuslike atmosphere.

🗺️Multiple Locations (including LIS airport) see website for store locations

🕰️Store hours vary, check individual store for hours

🌐The Fantastic World of Sardines

Tourist Trap? Yes. Huge Variety of Sardines? Yes. Can you find many of the offerings in other stores at slightly lower prices? Yes. Convenient and easy one-stop-shop to get all the sardines your heart desires? Also, yes.

If you are just looking to grab a few tins of sardines and other tinned fish as souvenirs or gifts, this is a great place to do so. With numerous locations throughout the city, it is almost impossible not to pass one of these circus themed stores.

A Vida Portuguesa

A Vida Portuguesa, in addition to all the other treasures that can be found there, boasts one of the best and most beautiful sardine selections in the city. If you are looking to a tin to display, or gift for someone; A Vida Portuguesa is definitely the place to look.

Store information above.

Markets

Lisbon is a Mecca of markets, featuring everything from artisan crafts and goods, to food and drinks, books, antiques, clothes, jewelry, and much more. Markets are a great place to find unique, handmade items, and support local small businesses and independent sellers.

Markets are held on different days throughout the week, so there is a good chance you will fine at least one while visiting the city. While some accept credit cards, be sure to have cash on hand.

Feira da Ladra Flea Market (Santa Clara Market)

🗺️Campo de Santa Clara, 1100-472 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Saturday & Tuesday 9a-6p

🌐Feira da Ladra

The Feira da Ladra flea market is Lisbon’s longest running market, and some historians believe it may even go back as far as the 12th Century. It’s a great place to find antiques, old books, coins, furniture, vintage clothing, artwork – anything really.

The Feira da Ladra takes place every Tuesday and Saturday between 6 am and 5 pm in Campo de Santa Clara in Alfama. Be sure to bring cash and your negotiation skills.

Feira De Alfarrabistas

🗺️Rua Anchieta Lisboa (next to Livraria Bertrand)

🕰️Saturdays 10a-5p

The Feira de Alfarrabistas is a weekly second-hand book market that place in Chiado on Rua da Anchieta. You’ll find a mixture of second hand books here, from simply second-hand to antique and valuable books, along with old maps, comic books, old newspapers, and vintage postcards.

This is s great place to find some really unique and authentic treasures, while also remaining sustainable and supporting local vendors.

Principe Real Biological Market

If you like to shop organically, the best place to head is the Biological Market in Principe Real. This small weekly Saturday market takes place between 9 am and 2pm, and attracts vendors from all over Portugal who sell fruit and vegetables, herbs, soaps, olive oil, and healthier takes on traditional Portuguese cakes and sweets.

🗺️Praça do Príncipe Real, 1250-096 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Saturdays 9-2 (seasonally)

This is one of my favorite markets in Lisbon. There is a great variety of artisan products without it being overwhelming and the vendors are always kind and not at all pushy.

LXMarket

🗺️R. Rodrigues de Faria 103, 1300-501 Lisboa, Portugal

🕰️Sundays 10a-7p

The LXMarket is held in LX Factory, about half way between Lisbon and Belem, on Sundays and has a bohemian, “Soho” vibe. The market has an overall cool vibe, with unique handcrafted items including: soaps and skin care, clothes, vintage stalls, food and drink items, bags, candles, and much more.

If you are in Lisbon on a Sunday, it is well worth the trip to LX Factory to browse the LXMarket, as well as the many shops and restaurants in this once a thriving industrial hub but has transformed into a trendy neighborhood.

T Shirts

Finding souvenir T-Shirts in Lisbon is certainly not difficult. T-shirts, Long sleeves, sweatshirts, onesies of all sizes and styles are available in endless shops throughout the city. There are great options at many of the markets, but if your schedule doesn’t allow time to visit a market on your visit, there are some good brick and mortar options as well.

If you are looking for something a bit more unique, or higher quality, these are some suggested sellers:

Typographia

We care about the complete t-shirt lifecycle: fabric choice, printing technique, design conception... all the way until the day it becomes your pyjama.

While not exclusively a T-shirt shop, Archivo has a great selection of unique shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts and even aprons. Shirts have fun, unique designs that are outside the standard Portugal prints. Many are great conversation starters.

Bars and Breweries

Many local bars and breweries also offer a great selection of T-shirts. These are often unique conversation starters and a great way to support a local business.

My dad loves a good bar T-shirt and I found him a great one at Canil Marquês.
