Where to Eat in Lisbon
Lisbon is a true foodie’s dream.
While it may be controversial, I encourage everyone visiting to Lisbon to delve in to all the delicious, fresh, beautiful Portuguese cuisine you can get your hands on, but also to branch out to the many other cuisines Lisbon has to offer.
Lisbon is overflowing with amazing options, with influences from all over the world.
From Cape Verde, Mozambique, India, Asia, other parts of Europe, and even influences from the US and Canda, and so much more, the culinary scene in Lisbon has something for every palette.
These are some of my favorite breakfast & brunch • dinner • vegan restaurants • markets • sweet treats and bakeries.

Restaurant Etiquette and Norms
A few points on restaurant culture in Portugal for those who may not be familiar
Tipping - This will vary on who you ask, but the consensus seems to be that tipping is never expected, but is always appreciated.
Some good practices for good services and/or to show appreciation:
Round up (ie: if the total bill is 13,80€ pay 15€)
10% of the total
1€ per plate or 5-10€ per table depending on size of the party and bill amount
Opening Times - Dinner in Portugal tends to be later than many places, with most places opening at 7:00pm.
Keep in mind that many places are only open for dinner, or close between lunch and dinner service.
Many local restaurants are also closed on Sunday and Monday, so it is always advisable to check opening times and plan accordingly if there are particular places you would like to eat at.
Service - Meals in Portugal are meant to be enjoyed slowly.
There is often no rush, not timeline, no pressure or server approaching every 5 minutes to check in and see what you may need.
Some travelers see this as rude or poor service if they are not accustomed to it or expecting it, but knowing a few of these common practices can make for a much better dining experience:
Seat yourself: In most casual dining places, especially for lunch, there is no need to wait for a host/ess (there likely isn’t one) and you can just grab any open table and a server will come to you shortly. If I see a server, or other staff, I will usually just ask “anywhere is okay?” and the answer is almost always “yes”. Generally, any place that would like you to wait to be seated, will have a sign stating so.
If you need something, ask: It is not considered rude to wave down a server, or pop your hand up if you are ready to order, need another drink, want the check, etc.
It is a very rare occurrence for a server to offer or bring a check to a table without being asked. In the 2 years I have been traveling to Portugal, there has only been one occasion where I was asked if it was okay to bring the check and that was because my party was there well past closing time and the owner needed to go home. If you are finished and ready to pay, simply let the server know you would like the check.
*It saves them a trip if you let them know you are paying with a card when asking for the check, as nearly all restaurants bring the card reader to the table.
Asking for the bill in Portuguese: A conta, por favor (the bill, please)
Couvert is not free
This can consist of a variety of things from bread, butter, and olives, or cut vegetables, bread sticks, etc and is brought to the table at a beginning of a meal. This is often assumed to be free, but is not. It is generally a minimal cost, but still a cost so don’t be surprised if it is added to your bill.
This can be turned down when brought to the table with a simple “No thank you” or left unopened/untouched on the table.
Water - Generally when ordering water in a restaurant, you will be asked “still or sparkling” then “big or small” and be brought a bottle accordingly.
I have never had an issue requesting tap water, which I often prefer over utilizing a plastic bottle, and because it is free.

The name says it all: if you love breakfast, this is the place for you. Everything was fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. At both locations, the space itself is cozy, beautiful and comfortable. The menu has something for everyone, but I must agree with the servers’ recommendation to go with one of the benedicts (followed closely by the toasts).

A bit off the beaten path, Canto is well worth the trek for the fresh and delicious brunch. The restaurant is a simple and cozy space, and the menu features both unique and classic dishes. The pancakes were some of the best I have had in Lisbon and the baked eggs were flavorful and so satisfying. The lunch menu looks just as enticing as the breakfast menu.
While a bit outside the city center, the location offers the added bonus of not being packed with tourists and not having to wait in a long line (like some of the overhyped brunch spots in the city center).

Four Words: Biscoff Crusted French Toast.
I bookmarked Heim Cafe a over a year ago and finally made it recently for a birthday brunch with a new friend. It was the perfect place to enjoy a great meal in a cute atmosphere with an eclectic crowd. The French toast was incredible, but I cannot wait to get back and try more of the impressive menu.

Flat Cafe is a cozy place in the center of Lisbon where you can feel just like home. Here we cook Scandinavian open toasts made out of local products, brew specialty coffee offer natural wine by glass or bottle.
While the food and service here were incredible, an added appeal is watching the funicular pass by.
Don’t let the name fool you, getting to this cute little café involves nothing flat, but is worth the climb.

Seagull Method Cafe shines when it comes to friendly service, a unique and fresh menu, and a warm atmosphere. It is also a great place to join friends, or post up with your laptop or a book. The menu ranges from sweet to savory, indulgent (see: the mac’n’cheese) to healthy with an array of salads.
Centrally located, this great breakfast and brunch spot is hit and miss with table availability, so I recommend a reservation or being prepared to wait a bit if you hit a busy time.

Fauna & Flora restaurants are little oases in the city, with their calm and peaceful decor and delicious food, these locations are a great place to have breakfast. brunch or lunch. They are also very solo dinner and laptop friendly. I highly recommend the pumpkin pancakes.

I went to Tease Cafe on a recommendation from a friend and absolutely loved it. I comfortably sat at this super cute cafe for a hours working while enjoying some delicious veggie fare and an amazing chocolate desert and espresso. Highly recommend stopping in for lunch, brunch of just enjoying a sweet treat and coffee.

The pancakes are a personal favorite and are a perfect portion, while the brunch combos offer a hearty (perfect post-night out) array of breakfast yums. The staff has always been super friendly and accommodating and the restaurant is on a cute little side street in Alfama.

Mercearia do Século was a vey happy accident. I met up with a couple that I had befriended for dinner on their lastnight in Lisbon and we were unable to get a table at the restaurant we planned to go to. One of them quickly found an alternative and we started walking towards it, but were so drawn to the sight and smells of Mercearia do Século as we passed, we abandoned that option and went in.
Upon looking at the menu, we decided we needed all of it. We practiced a smidge of self control and went with a bottle of Venho Verde recommnded by the owner, as well as three appetizers, three entrees and two desserts.
Not a single bite was short of amazing.
The space is beautiful, cozy, warm and welcoming, as was the owner who shared the history of the restaurant and her passion for cooking and food.

The Fam Kitchen was on my list of places to visit for a while. I planned to go with friends or meet ups on a few occasions, but for one reason or another, those plans kept falling through. I finally went on my most recent visit to Lisbon when a friend came to visit and I was immediately filled with regret I had not gone earlier so I could have gone many times over.
Everything from the stunning artwork, to the service, to the sangria, to the food and the DESSERTS was absolutely incredible.
I will absolutely be a regular on future stays.

In order to enjoy the amazing and unique small bites at Tati, you will need to get out of the main tourist area and head up to Penha de Franca. This neighborhood bistro is packed with locals and the occasional tourist who lucked out with a recommendation from a local or tour guide (or me). The no-frills decor, and simple setting are a contrast to the unique and flavor-packed dishes on the rotating menu.
After a brief chat, I asked the server to choose my dishes and she did not let me down. Every bite was incredible.

The line for this absolute gem is down the block (or stairs, in this case) almost every night of the week, with very good reason. Be sure to make a reservation if going for dinner. After attempting to go for dinner, without reservations, on several occasions, I realized they were open for lunch. If you are lucky enough to go for lunch, when all is quiet and the owner is there (which she will be) you just may be fortunate enough to have her sit with you and share her story.
*High likelihood you will pass this spot at least twice before finding it! It is down an “alley” between buildings, then up the stairs.
The original location, nestles in the narrow walkways of Alfama, has equally incredible food and service.

This was such a happy and random find! The owner was so kind and welcoming that we came back a second time for a full feast after stopping in for a sangria and quick bite while wandering Bairro Alto. Brazilian fare with delicious cocktails and a cool boho vibe. Make sure to check out the “decor” in the bathroom (and watch your head on the way in).
Open for lunch as of December 2022! Also check out the larger, sister restaurant (same name) across the street.

I happened upon Di Marzano Café Vermuteria with Bachelor #3 and it ended up being the perfect cozy date spot. The atmosphere and vibe are just… cool, as are the cocktails and menu, which has a bit of everything for everyone. Every time I go here I envision it being my very cool house. Recommended by the owner of the Fam Kitchen, my friend and I went to Restaurante Moçambicano Roda Viva for dinner when she was in Lisbon visiting. A laid back, casual dining experience (they let her bring “appetizers” from across the street while I was on my way), the food at this Mozambiquan Restuarant is packed with flavor with hearty portions and a truly homemade feel. They also have a great unique beer selection.

Stumbled into this wonder after a couple of park sangrias and were so glad we did! The owner is a breath of fresh air as is the fun and eclectic decor of this open kitchen spot. I have often found that vegan restaurants back home, and many places around the world are more expensive than there carnivore-friendly counterparts, but Lisbon has some really affordable all veggie options.

With the sweetest owners, warm and cozy space, and absolutely delicious food, Veganeats Caffe has quickly become one of my favorite lunch spots. With a very limited, but satisfying menu, it is easy to come in and just trust the process, especially when the lunch special is only 6€ for small plate and 8€ for a large. For those looking for something simple, a bowl of soup with a side of bread will only cost you about 3€ and a light snack of a delicious sweet or savory pastry is readily available,

Stumbling upon this beautiful restaurant was a very happy accident. Don’t blink, or you will miss the entrance (which is down a short alleyway). The owner is kind and welcoming and accommodating when you cannot decide on which of the two lunch entrees of the day you want. Organi Chiado features a small menu, to assure a fresh daily menu, but still has plenty of delicious options to choose from. Everything available sounded delicious and as much as I loved my vegan Brazilian stew, I had plate envy of everything that passed me. The portion sizes are very generous, prices are affordable, quality is top notch, and service is excellent. Organi is an overall great experience from every angle.

This cute little vegan restaurant feels like a green oasis in the middle of the city and serves up a classic “bar” menu of pizzas, burger, tacos, and nachos. The burgers are delicious and come with a solid serving of fries and, after peeping the tacos at the table next to me, I can assure you will not leave hungry.

I will be honest, I was hesitant to go to Veganapati due to its location along a very touristic street, but I am so glad I finally went because it was delicious. It is a cute little oasis in a sea of touristic restaurants. The menu is a bit eclectic featuring everything from ramen to tacos to burgers, and a lot in between, so there is something for every veggie lover. I had warm and friendly service and would happily return.

Kong Vegan is tucked away on a little side street, just passed Pink Street. The unassuming entry leads one to expect a small, homey, restaurant, but once you get to the top of the stairs, the space opens in to a large, beautiful, modern, chic space.
The service was kind and friendly and the menu had some really great options, but I went with the vegan twist on a Portuguese favorite and got the Francesinha, which did not disappoint one bit.

After several failed attempts to go to Ao 26 for dinner (without reservations) I walked by on a random midafternoon and was able to enjoy lunch in a near-empty restaurant. The service was incredible, that setting is beautiful, the sangria was tasty, and the food was an absolute meat-free treat. Absolutely recommend for anyone seeking a great vegan meal in an elevated setting.

Think being vegan (or egg or dairy free) means you need to miss out on the world renowned pastel de nata? Think again! Vegan Nata offers a fantastic option for vegan and non-dairy folks. I have done my fair share of pastel de nata sampling and, compared to the real deal, Vegan nata comes very close to some of the best.

Lisbon is full of incredible markets featuring fresh breads, seafood, fruits, veggies, cheese, meat, olives, and so much more. Many of the markets also have food stalls serving up fresh and delicious snacks and meals.
Whether you are grocery shopping, picking up some fresh baked breads, or looking for a yummy meal, Lisbon’s markets are sure to please.

Time Out Market Lisbon is a wonderment of all the food and drink; offering… everything, literally; everything. I am hesitant to add this to a “must visit” list, because it IS an overpriced, overcrowded tourist trap; BUT, it it also a lot of fun and a great way to please a group.
If you are not one to just “wander and choose”, head to the website that has an interactive map that lets you know all that the Market has to offer to pre-plan your attack. Make sure to end (or start) your visit with a Crush Donut.

While not technically an “eatery” (though samples are plenty… especially from the olive ladies) Mercado da Ribeira is absolutely worth a walk through with all it’s colors, scents, and variety, it is a true beauty. Located in the same building as Time Out, this market boasts all things fresh from fruits, veggies, meats, eggs, cheese, olives, and flowers. Great place to grab some fresh staples for your airbnb or grab a quick fresh snack.

This market is the best of all worlds with all the freshness (veggies, fruit, meats, cheeses, flowers), spices, bakeries, and prepared food (including some amazing sushi). Well worth a visit whether it is grabbing groceries, a cup cake, or having an entire dining experience (or all of the above).
Bakeries and Sweet Treats
While Lisbon (and maybe all of Portugal) is best known for its infamous pasteis de nata, Lisbon has an endless amount of bakeries and sweet treats for every pastry lover’s taste. From local treats like pasteis de nata, bolas, and malassada to cakes, cookies, and everything in between, Lisbon has it all.
Bonus: The hills to get to and from these tasty spots negate any and all calories ;)

This is a VERY controversial topic, but these are the best Pastéis de Nata in Lisbon. There are numerous locations throughout the city, including one in Time Out Market, so you will never have to go too far to locate one. They are always fresh, and always delicious. As bonus, you can watch the being made in shop while enjoying one (or two or three).

After a delicious vegan lunch at Cheeky Leeks, I stumbled upon Milkees and couldn’t resist the smell of fresh brewed coffee and fresh baked cookies wafting from the door. I am so glad I didn’t fight the urge for a sweet treat because this cookie (and the one I took to go) was devine. Dare I say, Milkees may rival some of the best NYC cookies I have had.
The patio is a laptop friendly space, and what better place to have a meeting or catch up on some work than with a cookie and cafe?

Pastelaria Alcoa is more like an art exhibit than a pastry shop with it’s beautiful confections and display, featuring several Portuguese treats. The only downside to this pastry shop is that you may be overwhelmed by choice. I have done some extensive sampling and can confidently say that you cannot go wrong with any choice.

🌐LOJA ONLINE | Doces Teresa Pyrrait
A little outside the main tourist area, Doces Teresa Pyrrait, is worth a visit for a delicious sweet treat. I almost passed this beautiful little shop, but the incredible smells wafting out of it drew me back across the street, and I am so glad they did. This is also a great place to order or pick up a special occasion cake or desert.

Located near Green Street, Ceres is one of my favorite places to grab a sweet treat and some bread. Always friendly service, fresh baked breads, a variety of meats and cheeses, delicious pastries, and now sandwiches, this is the perfect place to grab some hosting essentials, a quick bite or something sweet.

No words can compete with the heavenly smells that waft from Pão Com Calma, which is how I discovered this incredible local bakery. Everything from the bread to the sweet and savory, to the pretzels… the PRETZELS are absolutely amazing. You will be overwhelmed by choice, but in the best possible way.
