Winner of the World Travel Award for World's Leading City Destination, Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and has rapidly grown in popularity, hosting nearly 6 million overnight guests in 2023.
Luckily, the city has a vast array and variety of accommodations for visitors on all budgets, but it can be challenging and time consuming to find the perfect one for your stay.
Though I have spent quite a bit of time in Porto, I have only visited hotel and guest house bars, restaurants, and spas. While I have not enjoyed overnight stays, I am fortunate enough to have ties to some top-rated local guides and residents who I polled for the best hotels in Porto.
This list is the hotels that came up most frequently and were recommended by numerous guides and Porto insiders.

Porto City Taxes and ID
For all hotel and Short-Term Rentals in Porto
A tax is imposed by the city: EUR 2.00 per person, per night, up to 7 nights.
This tax does not apply to children under 13 years of age.
It is often collected in cash at the beginning or end of your stay (sometimes it is included in the booking for hotels).
Passport information is required for all non-Portuguese residents staying in hotels and Short-Term Rentals. At hotels, a copy of each guest’s passport will be taken at check in. Often, short term rentals (ie: Airbnb, VRBO, etc) will request a copy be sent prior to your stay.
This is legally required by the Portuguese government to register all foreign guests.

On my first trip to Porto, my friends stayed here, and I we all fell in love with it’s local charm, beautiful rooms, and views. The rooms all feature a kitchenette and are quite spacious. All rooms on the top floor feature a balcony, which offers great views, but also requires climbing some extra stairs.
The property has several room types to accommodate solo travelers, couples, groups and families comfortably.

This stunning hotel and spa is located just across the river in Gaia. Overlooking the city of Porto and offering beautiful river views, it is still easily accessible to all the main attractions of the area.
Great for solo travelers or couples seeking a luxe and relaxing stay, this is also a great option for families or those traveling with groups, as the rooms are apartment style, and all rooms have a kitchen and seating area. 2- and 3-bedroom units sleeping up to 6 guests are available.
The hotel offers numerous amenities and services, including in-room childcare (for a fee) if you are looking for a kid-free night out.
The hotel allows pets (cats and dogs only) up to 33lbs for a fee, but pets cannot be left unattended.
